The worst supervisor I ever had to work for was an inept, incompetent, and very mean attorney; I'll call him JBD. He was also mentally unstable. He practiced both PI (personal injury) and immigration law, but he was such a disorganized, unstable nutcase that he had very few clients. My job was only meant to be temporary, until he hired a full-time secretary, but it was torment for me. Apparently, it was also torment for his previous secretary, who was so fed up with him that she quit without giving notice. He had his clients' files scattered and piled up all over his office; he would physically twirl and spin around in an agitated way, shouting that he couldn't find the folders for this or that client. He constantly shoved paperwork from one client into another client's folder. He would photocopy and physically Scotch-tape a client's signature from one document to another and photocopy the new one, so it would look as if the client had actually signed the new document. He would also occasionally forge his clients' signatures. His grammar and spelling were atrocious, and these errors would appear in legal briefs that he would take to court. (I frequently wondered how he managed to pass the state bar, and I'm amazed that, to my knowledge, none of his clients had filed a complaint with the state bar against him.) He was also paranoid: the state DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) returned a document he'd mailed to their office regarding a client's injury in a traffic accident, because he'd misspelled his client's last name; he refused to acknowledge his spelling error and said the DMV was trying to "get" him. He then yelled at me, telling me this was my fault, even though he had mailed this document to the DMV himself before I'd even started working for him. There were a few times when he didn't pay me; when I reminded him that I needed my paycheck, he would say that he'd "forgotten" about it and would grudgingly make out a check to me, with a grouchy look on his face. This attorney's behavior was so distressing to me that I became physically ill with stomach aches and head aches; the only reason I toughed it out was due to my financial need. Eventually, he told me he had found a permanent replacement - I was extremely relieved. He was a total mess and a loser as a lawyer.
